![]() ![]() In the menu’s the music seems more soft and somber where out in the battlefield it ramps up and is more present but still doesn’t take away from the sounds of everything else. When it comes to the sound its got just as much thought put into it as the graphics, between the sound of the waves and the soft acoustic music, each explosion, crash, and cannon fire is easily heard and you know exactly which way it’s coming from. But the level of detail doesn’t just stop with maps and boats even the menus look awesome, the small details around the main screen the crew and all the other menus look great. Traversing each map is well thought out but can take you by surprise if you’re not paying close attention, its easy to crash into rocks, get swept away in the wrong direction or swallowed whole by the large maelstroms that are formed in multiple locations around the map. There are 2 distinctly different maps to play on, an icy cold climate with icebergs jetting up from the waters with statues up above watching everyone’s movements, the other has a grand castle in the center with a much more darker theme and again the amount of detail took me back, every window, every tower, brilliantly sculpted. Everything from the sails to the hull has great detail and vibrant color which clash against the darkness of the waters below. The humans have a classic sailboat design with a dark red hull, the orcs have fewer sails and each ship is pulled by shark-like creatures and the hull has a dark green coloring with iron accents, the dwarves are very mechanical with gold and blue colors and lastly the undead is bright green with ghostly sails. Each race has its own style which is easily recognizable out on the open ocean. Let’s start with the visuals, the amount of detail on every ship is stunning and with every upgrade adds more to the ship. The overall theme of Maelstrom has a very pirate-y vibe in both visuals and music that fits it well. There isn’t much in terms of story as the whole game is PVP based with the simple objective of winning battles however each boat has its own lore found in the game’s wiki. Then on top of that each race shoots slightly different and can move differently too, for example, the dwarves can shoot in all four directions and can even reverse but the fire rate is much slower compared to the rest then the undead can shoot either side and behind but not forward but shoots more cannons dealing more damage. Each faction fights slightly different from the rest and each faction has three different types of boats, the boats consist of the sloop which is a much smaller target and moves the fastest of the three but has less firepower and armor in comparison, you have the brigade which is the middle of the road with ok firepower speed and armor and is most likely the best for those starting out, and finally, you have the battleship it is much slower but has much more armor and firepower. ![]() Maelstrom is a free to play, naval battle royal with a fantasy theme, you play as one of four factions that are the Humans, Orcs, Dwarves and recently added Undead the aim of the game is to survive and come out on top.
